PELORUS – a broker’s view.

Partner and Senior Broker Dominic Millman introduces the largest recent signing to the Burgess sales fleet, the 115m (377.3ft) PELORUS. With Heywood exteriors, Disdale interiors, build by Lurssen with DNV-GL Lloyd's Register classification, her pedigree is as good as it gets, but what is she actually like? Millman reports from on board

Describe PELORUS for us

‘It is a term often used, but in the larger yacht sector I believe PELORUS is "the" yachting icon,’ says Millman.

‘The obvious fact is that at 115m and 5,403GT she has extraordinary volume with a perfect balance of interior and exterior deck spaces. It also allows for all of the features that make a yacht eminently desirable: an elevator to all decks, an incredible spa, wonderful gym with its own sea terrace, brilliant cinema, very flexible accommodation too, including cabins with balconies and sea terraces – she really has it all, and there’s deck after deck after deck of it.

What are your favourite features on board?

‘The interior is very special indeed, hugely stylish and detailed but informal and welcoming at the same time, with the warm, familiar feel of these beautiful textured wooden floorboards underfoot. Another delightful feature is the number of folding terraces, five in total on main and lower decks including two outside the dining room and main saloon. As entertainment and relaxation spaces, the aft decks have the perfect balance of inside and outside space. It just feels so right. It's very cleverly done but impossible not to notice.

‘Disdale has that sort of natural, open-grain wood finish on many yachts but PELORUS is its zenith – it’s Disdale at its absolute best. On other large yachts it can feel a bit formal but on PELORUS it’s just so relaxed, so welcoming and restful. 

She also has that vast, signature transom door that folds down to become the most spectacular sea-level set-up. She’s jaw-dropping, a quite stunning yacht.’

What type of client does she suit?

‘I honestly wouldn't try to pigeon-hole her. She is so capable, so versatile, that she can turn her hand to anything. Her adaptable accommodation means you could run her as a family yacht with a huge selection of tenders - no fewer than six including Vikal limo and sport tenders, an Xtender RIB and a Hinckley - and too many toys to mention.

'She also serves as a party yacht for serious entertainment with lots of guests, nightclub dancefloors and light shows inside and out. The morning after there's this wonderful wellness centre to help you recover and go again. She's just one of those hugely impressive yachts.’

What is her asking price?

She’s asking EUR 185,000,000 but when you think about the replacement cost of a yacht like PELORUS, you’re well on the way to EUR 500,000,000, plus five or six years to build – if the quality yards have any empty slots, which they don’t. PELORUS is available now, her new owner could be cruising in a matter of weeks.

Which type of client will buy her?

'I would never rule it out but it’s unlikely to be a first-time buyer in my opinion. I think she'll attract an established yacht owner from a mature yachting market. She's the ultimate, apex superyacht, she’s the realisation of a yacht owner's dream.

'To that end she will probably go to someone who owns, or has owned, a very large yacht, someone who feels frustrated with the cost and long delivery times of building a large yacht. She is a large, quality yacht of untouchable pedigree, one that is available now with a wonderful interior that could perfectly possibly be left as it is. There's no question, for the right buyer PELORUS is a compelling proposition in today's market.

How is the yacht being marketed?

‘The yacht is at the Kusch shipyard in Germany undergoing routine class maintenance and surveys. She’s available for viewings any time so please get in touch and I’ll be delighted to get back on board again and show you around. I know you’ll be impressed.’
